Today, the Commission for Public Higher Education was announced as a new consortium formed by six public university systems. This initiative aims to establish a unique accreditation model for public higher education institutions, focusing on academic excellence and student outcomes.
Chancellor Ray Rodrigues of the State University System of Florida expressed pride in collaborating with other university leaders to create an accreditor that emphasizes high-quality programs and data-driven decisions. University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue highlighted the goal of maintaining high standards and value for students through collaboration with neighboring states.
University of North Carolina System President Peter Hans stated that a focused approach to accreditation would reduce costs and strengthen public higher education. Thad H. Westbrook, Chair of the University of South Carolina Board of Trustees, noted that this innovation in accreditation would benefit universities and colleges nationwide.
President Randy Boyd from the University of Tennessee System emphasized providing more choices in accreditation, while Incoming Chancellor Glenn Hegarof from Texas A&M University System mentioned efforts towards a transparent pathway for accreditation.
The Commission aims to offer rigorous, transparent standards ensuring academic quality and operational excellence. The UNC System enrolls nearly 248,000 students across 17 institutions and is known for its diverse educational offerings and significant research expenditures.
