Fire crews in North Carolina and from 14 other states are working to contain the Black Cove Fire, Deep Woods Fire, and Fish Hook Fire, with 458 personnel engaged in these efforts. Recent weather conditions, including higher humidity and calmer winds, have lessened fire activity, aiding crews in their containment efforts.
The Black Cove Fire is currently 3,410 acres and 23% contained. The fire, located 2 miles northeast of Saluda in the Green River Gorge, began on March 19 due to a downed powerline. Crews have started suppression repair in the northeast area to rehabilitate fire-affected zones.
In the same region, the Deep Woods Fire spans 3,797 acres and is 32% contained, situated about 5 miles northwest of Columbus. A strategic firing operation completed around Holbert Cove Road is proving successful in controlling the fire. The cause of this fire remains under investigation since it was first reported on March 19.
The Fish Hook Fire near Lake Adger covers 199 acres and is 95% contained. It began on March 20, also due to a downed powerline. Firefighters continue containment efforts, focusing on securing firebreaks and extinguishing smoldering areas.
Evacuation situations are under constant review, and affected residents are directed to refer to Polk and Henderson county websites for updates. A Temporary Flight Restriction remains in effect, restricting airspace to protect firefighting operations.
Governor Josh Stein declared a State of Emergency on March 26 to enhance wildfire response in Western North Carolina. Additionally, a statewide ban on open burning was issued on March 21, canceling all permits until further notice.
