Governor Josh Stein announced that Medicaid expansion in North Carolina has led to 650,000 residents gaining access to affordable health care. This expansion includes veterans and workers from several essential industries.

“Medicaid expansion shows what is possible when our state’s leaders come together in a bipartisan effort to serve North Carolinians,” stated Governor Stein, highlighting the innovative and fiscally responsible nature of North Carolina’s Medicaid program. He emphasized its importance for taxpayers, the workforce, and rural health care access.

Since its launch on December 1, 2023, the expansion has led to the filling of 6.1 million prescriptions for various health conditions, and $86 million in dental service claims have been processed. More than 233,000 rural residents have enrolled, accessing health care they might otherwise lack. The state has also seen a significant reduction in overdose cases, with emergency department visits due to overdoses dropping by 29% and suspected overdose deaths falling by 27% from 2023 to 2024.

“From a regular check-up, to specialized care for a chronic condition, to filling a prescription without worrying about high co-pays, getting health coverage is life-changing for people in every county,” mentioned NC Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai.

Overall, NC Medicaid provides health coverage to more than 3 million state residents, including children, older adults, individuals with disabilities, and working adults. However, current federal congressional proposals threatening to cut Medicaid could undermine these gains, negatively affecting health care access and the state’s economy.

The NCDHHS’ Medicaid Expansion webpage offers details on eligibility, application processes, and support networks. The Medicaid Expansion Dashboard further provides comprehensive data across all North Carolina counties.
