As the summer beach season approaches, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Coastal Management (DCM) has highlighted its interactive public beach and waterfront access map. This tool is accessible from mobile devices and desktops, providing a convenient way for residents and visitors to find locations along North Carolina’s beaches or coastal waterfronts.

The map features over 800 local, state, and federally funded access sites. Users can benefit from tools like “Find Sites Near Me,” which locates sites within a 10-mile radius of a given location. The My Location tool pinpoints the user’s location for more accurate searches when location sharing is enabled on their device.

Additionally, the Near Me tool allows users to search for locations within a specified distance from any point. It can be used with other tools like My Location and Filter. The Filter tool helps users find sites based on specific amenities such as restrooms and showers by activating corresponding sliders.

For different viewing preferences, the Basemap tool offers various map styles including satellite imagery, street maps, and topographic maps.

Since its inception in 1981, DCM’s Public Beach and Coastal Waterfront Access Program has awarded 530 grants totaling over $55 million. These funds have been used for land acquisition and construction projects aimed at improving pedestrian access to beaches and waterways in North Carolina. Projects include walkways, dune crossovers, restrooms, parking areas, piers, and related infrastructure improvements.

For further inquiries or comments about the map, Rachel Love-Adrick can be contacted at Rachel.love-adrick@deq.nc.gov. Correspondence should include the site location in question.
