The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) will hold a virtual media briefing on Wednesday, January 14 at 3 p.m. to discuss a recent increase in flu-related deaths across the state.
According to the latest update from the NC Respiratory Virus Surveillance Dashboard, there has been a significant rise in fatalities associated with influenza. The dashboard indicates that as of January 14, 2026, there have been 63 additional flu-related deaths reported, bringing the total number for this flu season to 134. This figure includes three pediatric deaths. At this point last year, NCDHHS had reported 74 flu-related deaths.
NCDHHS continues to encourage all residents aged six months and older to receive their seasonal vaccines and practice measures to protect themselves and others during respiratory illness season. The department states that vaccines are among the most effective tools for preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death caused by flu and other viral respiratory infections such as COVID-19 and RSV. Vaccination is particularly important for children who face higher risks of severe disease or complications—especially those under five years old, children under two years old, or anyone with chronic health conditions including asthma, diabetes, or weakened immune systems.
Dr. Erica Wilson, Medical Director of the Medical Consultation Unit within NCDHHS’s Division of Public Health, will be available during the virtual session to answer questions from credentialed members of the media regarding respiratory illnesses and the recent uptick in flu-related deaths.
Credentialed media representatives interested in attending can RSVP via email to news@dhhs.nc.gov in order to receive access details for the Zoom meeting.
