Governor Josh Stein of North Carolina recently met with state and local officials, business leaders, and housing experts to discuss strategies for increasing access to affordable housing across the state. The discussion aimed at addressing the challenges posed by high housing costs.
“Our state is growing, and people need a safe and affordable place to live,” said Governor Stein. “We will remain focused on identifying solutions to lower the cost of housing for North Carolinians at every stage of life and work to ensure every person has a safe place to call home.”
In his 2025-2027 budget proposal, Governor Stein has allocated $35 million annually to the Housing Trust Fund. This fund is considered the state’s most adaptable resource for housing needs. The allocation is intended to leverage private sector and federal funds to increase housing availability for low-income families, veterans, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. Additionally, the proposal includes $15 million for the Workforce Loan Program, which supports the construction and repair of affordable housing.
Governor Stein also backs bipartisan efforts in the General Assembly aimed at reducing bureaucratic hurdles to facilitate home building.
Furthermore, Governor Stein’s second Helene recovery budget proposal earmarks $113 million for advancing housing recovery in western North Carolina. This funding aims to assist families struggling with rent, mortgage payments, or utility bills.
