North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Secretary Reid Wilson visited Tar Heel School in Bladen County on September 10 to deliver school supplies. The donation included 26 boxes of supplies and was part of Governor Stein’s 2025 School Supply Drive, organized in partnership with the State Employees’ Credit Union (SECU).

The annual initiative brings together the Office of the Governor, Cabinet agencies, and SECU’s network to collect and distribute school supplies to all public school districts in North Carolina. The program aims to support students and educators across the state.

“DEQ employees were eager to support teachers and students through this school supply drive, and it’s great to have a chance to talk with students about clean air, clean water and clean energy,” said DEQ Secretary Reid Wilson.

The donated items were collected by DEQ staff from various locations statewide.

Tar Heel School serves pre-K through eighth grade students. It opened last year with several sustainability features including solar panels, a geothermal HVAC system, five electric school buses, and produces more energy than it consumes.

During his visit, Wilson read a book on recycling to kindergarteners and spoke with middle school students about renewable energy sources.
