Members of the media have been invited to attend a virtual meeting scheduled for Thursday, May 8. This meeting is organized by the Governor’s Advisory Council for Student Safety and Well-Being.

Governor Josh Stein established this Advisory Council through an executive order. The council’s mission is to promote safe, welcoming, and inclusive schools in North Carolina by proposing and implementing solutions aimed at improving school safety and enhancing student physical, social, and emotional well-being. It plans to advance recommendations, provide guidance to state agencies, collaborate with local communities, and share best practices. A primary focus of the council is working with the General Assembly to support school systems in creating cell phone-free classrooms.

The Advisory Council is co-chaired by Sen. Sydney Batch, Senate Democratic Leader; Heather Smith, who is recognized as North Carolina Teacher of the Year from Haywood County; and William L. Lassiter, deputy secretary of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

A livestream of the meeting will be available online for public viewing. Public comments can also be submitted online.
