The North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS) is collaborating with the Asheville Police Department for an event scheduled on Tuesday, June 3, as part of the third annual Week of Action. The gathering will take place at Tanger Outlets Mall, located at 800 Brevard Road in Asheville, NC, from 2 to 6 p.m. ET.

This initiative is part of the NC S.A.F.E. (Secure All Firearms Effectively) program, which NCDPS launched to address the concerning rise in firearm-related deaths among children and youth, as well as an increase in firearm thefts. The goal is to promote awareness about safe firearm storage practices.

“Firearms are now the leading cause of injury-related death for children and youth in North Carolina,” stated a spokesperson for NC S.A.F.E. “NC S.A.F.E. wants to teach North Carolinians that taking simple steps, like locking your weapons, can make communities safer and avoid preventable tragedies.”

At the event, community members will have access to NC S.A.F.E. resources and receive free gun locks provided by the Asheville Police Department.

For further details or interview requests regarding this event, media representatives are encouraged to reach out. A comprehensive media kit featuring prerecorded video responses to frequently asked questions, key facts and statistics, along with other resources for media personnel is available.

North Carolinians seeking information on effective and safe gun securing methods can find additional resources through NC S.A.F.E., which aims to reduce gun thefts, suicide attempts, and youth violence while enhancing community safety across North Carolina.

NC S.A.F.E., established in 2023, focuses on promoting best practices for firearm storage without aligning itself with advocacy-based initiatives related to gun laws or regulations.
