The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources will hold a public hearing on September 25 to gather public comments on a proposed amendment concerning laboratory certification rules. The hearing is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Ground Floor Hearing Room at the Archdale Building, located at 512 N. Salisbury St., Raleigh, with sign-in and speaker registration starting at 5:45 p.m.

The proposed amendment involves changes to the rule outlined in 15A NCAC 02H .0804. This amendment would add total nitrogen and pharmaceutical pollutants to the list of parameters that the Wastewater/Groundwater Laboratory Certification Branch can certify.

According to the department, “The scope of parameter methods for which WW/GW LCB may offer certification is limited to parameters listed in 15A NCAC 02H .0804.”

If adopted, the change would allow commercial laboratories providing analytical services to seek certification for these two additional parameters. It would also enable permit holders to report certified data that meets existing regulatory requirements.

In addition to speaking at the hearing, members of the public can submit written comments about the amendment until September 30. Written comments may be mailed to Laboratory Certification Branch Manager, 1623 Mail Service Center Raleigh, NC 27699-1623 or sent by email to DEQ.WR.CertificationRuleComments@deq.nc.gov.
