The North Carolina Department of Public Safety is promoting the NC S.A.F.E. Week of Action, a series of events aimed at addressing the issue of unsecured firearms in the state. Guns have become the leading cause of death among children and teens in North Carolina, with unlocked guns posing a significant risk.

The third annual NC S.A.F.E. (Secure All Firearms Effectively) Week of Action will involve community leaders, parents, law enforcement members, and health professionals. The events will include free gun lock giveaways, educational activities, and testimonials from families affected by firearm-related incidents. Representatives from NC S.A.F.E. will be available to discuss the initiative’s goals and the importance of secure firearm storage.

Events will occur from June 1 to June 7 across various locations in North Carolina. Highlights include:

– On June 1, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist in Winston-Salem will host a Summer Safety Fest with free bike helmets, life jackets, gun locks, food trucks, and more.
– On June 2, the TSA at Charlotte Douglas International Airport will hold a press conference on firearm safety at airports.
– On June 3, an awareness event with Asheville Police Department at Sportsman’s Warehouse in Tanger Outlets Mall.
– Other events throughout the week include community days in Laurinburg and Elizabeth City, festivals in Old Fort and Marion, and a Jeep Event Fun Fair hosted by Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

A full media kit is available for journalists covering these events.
