The North Carolina Department of Public Safety (NCDPS) will hold a press conference in Elizabeth City as part of the NC S.A.F.E. Week of Action. The event is scheduled for Friday, June 6, from 11 a.m. to noon at the Pasquotank High School Media Center.

State and local officials will participate in the conference to emphasize the importance of secure firearm storage. During the event, state leaders plan to present gun locks to interim Elizabeth City Police Chief Eddie Graham Jr. Additionally, a father from Fayetteville will share his experience regarding firearm safety in another person’s home.

The NC S.A.F.E. initiative, which stands for Secure All Firearms Effectively, was launched by NCDPS due to an increase in deaths among children and youths caused by firearms and a rise in firearm thefts. The program aims to educate North Carolinians on safe firearm storage practices.

According to reports from local law enforcement, firearms have become the leading cause of injury-related death for children and youth in North Carolina. In 2023 alone, there were incidents involving shootings in Elizabeth City.

NC S.A.F.E.’s objective is to teach residents that simple measures like locking weapons can enhance community safety and prevent avoidable tragedies.

For further information or interview requests related to this event, members of the media are encouraged to reach out directly. A comprehensive NC S.A.F.E. media kit with resources such as prerecorded video responses and key statistics is available.

More details about effectively securing firearms can be found through additional resources provided by NC S.A.F.E., which remains focused solely on raising awareness about safe firearm storage without involvement in advocacy-based initiatives concerning gun laws or regulations.
