Red Hat has announced that Navantia, a Spanish public company specializing in naval and defense systems, is using Red Hat’s open source technologies to modernize its system development and deployment. The collaboration aims to help Navantia improve the delivery of technologies for defense and naval readiness.
Navantia, which is part of the SEPI Group and has over 300 years of experience in shipbuilding and defense systems, needed to ensure operational continuity for its essential systems throughout their life cycle. These systems are expected to remain functional for more than thirty years. The rapid pace of hardware evolution posed additional challenges for maintaining long-term support.
To address these issues, Navantia focused on separating software from hardware dependencies. This approach allows the company to standardize system development across previously isolated teams, making maintenance and management more efficient.
The company implemented several Red Hat solutions, including Red Hat OpenShift as an application platform for virtualization, containers, and workload management in complex environments. This enables unified control over a wide range of applications. Red Hat Enterprise Linux serves as the base operating system for consoles, containers, and virtual machines. For centralized management and security updates, Navantia uses Red Hat Satellite. At the edge level, Red Hat Device Edge helps optimize software deployment on end devices.
According to Alejandro Cárdenas Romo, Head of Infrastructure and Cybersecurity at Navantia: “The adoption of Red Hat technologies has enabled us to make a qualitative leap in how we develop and deploy our systems. It provides us with the robustness and support we need to continue innovating in such a critical sector.”
Julia Bernal, country manager Spain and Portugal at Red Hat said: “The collaboration with Navantia is a testament to how open source solutions can drive digital transformation in sectors as demanding and critical as defense. We are proud to help Navantia modernize its operations, gain efficiency and control and lay the groundwork for continuous innovation that will keep it at the forefront of the naval defense sector.”
Navantia has also worked with Red Hat Consulting during implementation. The current phase includes developing advanced simulation tools focusing on predictive maintenance, automation, and operational efficiency through partnerships with strategic collaborators.
Looking forward, Navantia plans to expand these deployments within its operating systems as part of ongoing digital transformation efforts amid rising demands in the defense industry.
