Commercial Irish potato growers in North Carolina are being asked to vote on whether to renew a statewide assessment program that funds research and promotional activities for the industry. The N.C. Potato Association announced the referendum, which aims to continue efforts focused on improving production, marketing, and the long-term competitiveness of potatoes grown in the state.
“North Carolina potato growers have always shown a strong commitment to innovation and industry leadership,” said Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler. “This vote gives growers the chance to continue a program that has benefitted growers and helped them remain competitive.”
The assessment program provides financial support for research projects with North Carolina State University, encourages best practices in crop protection and fertility, and increases promotional campaigns that emphasize the quality of North Carolina potatoes. The funding also helps address new challenges in production, test new varieties, and maintain market visibility within the region.
Hunter Gibbs, president of the N.C. Potato Association, formally requested backing for this referendum at the November meeting of the N.C. Board of Agriculture. The board approved support for continuing the assessment program from 2025 through 2031.
Growers located in Beaufort, Camden, Chowan, Hyde, Pamlico, Pasquotank, Tyrrell, and Washington counties will receive ballots by mail. Approval from two-thirds of voting growers is needed to extend the six-year assessment period through 2031. Those who currently pay an assessment rate of one cent per hundred-weight of potatoes sold will be asked to maintain this rate in the upcoming November 24 vote.
North Carolina is among the leading producers of chipping potatoes on the East Coast. Its growers supply both major processors and fresh markets throughout the region. Continued investment in research and promotion enables quick adaptation within a competitive marketplace.
Completed ballots should be mailed to Northeast Marketing Center at P.O. Box 2066 in Elizabeth City by December 12. For more information about the referendum or programs supported by the N.C. Potato Association, contact their office at 984-303-7397 or visit www.ncpotatoes.org.
