The N.C. Mountain State Fair is set to offer a range of competitions, with the latest information now available online for participants. The fair will feature various contests, including a new “Mullet & ‘Stache” competition on September 6. Participants in this event can win cash prizes and ribbons based on their hairstyle or facial hair.

Winners of the mullet and facial hair contest will receive $50 for first place, $25 for second, and $10 for third. Contestants must use their natural hair but may apply styling products such as color or glitter. Judging criteria include appearance, style, presentation, and audience reaction.

On September 9, the Ice Cream Eating Contest returns with categories for different age groups: ages 5-7, 8-12, 13-17, and adults over 18. Sponsored by the N.C. Dairy Producers Association, this contest limits entries to the first 20 registrants per category. Winners will receive trophies and ribbons.

Sean McKeon, general manager of the N.C. Mountain State Fair, highlighted the diverse range of competitions available: “In addition to these special one-day only contests, the general and livestock competitions offered each year are always a fun, creative and inspiring part of the N.C. Mountain State Fair.”

Competitors can find detailed rules and deadlines in the online competition catalog. Key deadlines include August 8 for cooking competitions and gospel singing contests; August 15 for clogging; and August 22 for general exhibits and livestock shows.

Registration is conducted through ShoWorks at https://www.wncagcenter.org/p/mountainstatefair/exhibitors. Entry is free for all general exhibit categories open to North Carolina residents.

For those from Western N.C.’s outlying counties, a Pony Express Service allows entry drop-offs at local county extension offices by August 22.

Livestock categories cover cattle, swine, goats, sheep, poultry, rabbits, and llamas with specific registration fees applicable.

The fair will run from September 5-14 at the Western N.C. Ag Center in Fletcher. Discount tickets are currently available online.
