Lenovo has launched its Certified Refurbishment Services across 14 European countries, aiming to help businesses extend the life of their existing devices and reduce electronic waste. The service is part of Lenovo’s broader IT sustainability and lifecycle solutions in the EMEA region.
Traditionally, companies have either extended warranties or purchased new equipment when managing device lifecycles. Lenovo’s new offering introduces refurbishment as a third option, allowing organizations to restore and redeploy their current Lenovo devices internally. This approach seeks to balance technology refresh cycles while maximizing return on investment and minimizing environmental impact.
The service arrives at a time when European businesses are facing tighter IT budgets and increasing pressure to meet sustainability targets. According to Lenovo, Certified Refurbishment Services allow organizations to refurbish devices with original manufacturer standards, renew warranties, and lower the carbon footprint associated with IT operations.
Lenovo’s program aligns with upcoming regulations such as the EU Circular Economy Act and supports compliance with initiatives like the EU Green Deal—which targets a minimum 50% reduction in emissions by 2030—and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive that requires companies to disclose environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data.
“European organisations are looking for practical ways to meet sustainability targets without slowing innovation or increasing costs,” said Greg Smith, Executive Director and General Manager, EMEA Solutions and Services Group at Lenovo. “As EU mandates require organisations to rethink their technology strategies, Certified Refurbishment Services help reduce IT carbon footprint, optimise resources, and meet sustainable procurement goals while building long-term value and resilience along the way.”
The refurbishment services offer several levels: from light refreshes to full refurbishment including replacement of minor parts or displays. Devices can also be upgraded with additional memory instead of being replaced outright. This enables companies to prioritize new purchases for users who need high-performance hardware or emerging technologies like AI PCs while continuing to use refurbished units for standard tasks.
Refurbished devices undergo industry-standard data sanitization (NIST SP 800-88 compliant), comprehensive testing covering over 35 quality checks, component replacements as needed—including batteries—and cosmetic improvements. Each device comes with a renewed warranty.
James Pennington, Director of Global Sustainability Services at Lenovo, commented on the potential impact: “The European Commission estimates it could save up to 231 million tonnes of CO₂ from heavy industry each year through improved materials management and reduction, reuse and recovery measures,” he said. “Lenovo’s Certified Refurbishment Services support these goals by reducing waste and increasing sustainability while keeping performance and productivity at their peak.”
John Stamer, Vice President and General Manager for GPS and Sustainability Services at Lenovo added: “Lenovo has spent more than 35 years pushing the boundaries of engineering to deliver technology that’s smarter, more sustainable, and built to last. Our commitment to responsible innovation means that 71% of the devices we collect are reused or refurbished, extending their life and reducing environmental impact of new devices. That experience is exactly why we know our new Certified Refurbishment Services will deliver exceptional quality and reliability to EMEA businesses while helping advance their sustainability goals. This reflects Lenovo’s vision of empowering long-term IT value for businesses, their people, and the planet.”
The service is now available in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK.
