Families in the Triangle area will gather at Hub RTP to celebrate Juneteenth with a cultural and community-focused event. The “Party in the Park: Juneteenth Edition” is scheduled for Thursday, June 19, from 12 to 3 p.m., aligning with the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
The event features performances by local artists such as spoken-word poet Dasan Ahanu, musician Arvetra D. Jones, and Empower Dance Studio. Activities include DJ sets by DJ Damu, line dancing led by Marvis Henderson Daye, and Double Dutch sessions with the 40+ Double Dutch Club. A splashpad and yard games are available for families and children.
A vendor market will offer handmade goods from local creators like Sweet Hive Pottery and Eric Debrah Pottery. Food vendors include The Flat Drum and Boricua Soul among others. The first 50 attendees will receive a voucher for a free Icee.
Local nonprofits such as Urban Ministries of Durham will engage with visitors on topics including civil rights advocacy and public transportation access. Alisha Anderson from the Research Triangle Foundation commented on the event’s significance: “This meaningful occasion blends remembrance with fellowship…honor history while renewing our shared commitment to building a vibrant and equitable community.”
The event is free, but attendees should bring their own seating arrangements and essentials for water activities. In case of bad weather, it will be postponed to June 20.
