Honeywell and TotalEnergies are piloting an artificial intelligence-assisted control room at the Port Arthur Refinery in Texas. The initiative is based on Honeywell’s Experion Operations Assistant, which aims to help operators make faster and more informed decisions to optimize production.

The Experion Operations Assistant uses Honeywell’s distributed control system to integrate operational analytics with real-time predictive insights. This allows operators to forecast potential maintenance events before they occur, helping reduce risks linked to unsafe operations and production losses.

Raphael Duflos, Vice President and General Manager of TotalEnergies’ Port Arthur Platform, said, “Partnering with Honeywell at our Port Arthur Refinery represents an important step in our journey toward operational excellence across our facility. We believe this solution could contribute to safer operations, reduced downtime, and minimized product losses.”

A pilot program of the AI solution has already been implemented at the refinery’s Delayed Coking Unit. Early results indicate that the system was able to predict five potential events an average of 12 minutes ahead of alarm incidents. These predictions allowed operators to take corrective action quickly, minimizing downtime and reducing emissions from flaring.

Jim Masso, President and CEO of Honeywell Process Solutions, commented, “Honeywell’s decades of domain expertise and industry knowledge are helping to solve our customers’ toughest challenges with tangible solutions like Experion Operations Assistant. This pilot with TotalEnergies will mark a meaningful milestone for bridging the gap between autonomous technology and the operators that keep these facilities running safely and efficiently every day.”

TotalEnergies’ Port Arthur Platform processes crude oil into transportation fuels and petrochemicals used in various products including plastics, rubber, and pharmaceuticals. The pilot project is a collaboration between Honeywell, TotalEnergies’ local platform team, and its technology headquarters branch OneTech.
