Honeywell has announced a partnership with Ramsey County, Minnesota, to implement building automation and energy management technology at 10 county-managed ice rinks and the Ramsey County Parks and Recreation office. The initiative aims to reduce the county’s annual electricity costs by nearly 20%, lower operational expenses, and enhance system resilience.

This project supports Ramsey County’s Climate Equity Action Plan, which was established in 2024. The plan sets a goal to reduce energy use and transition to 100% carbon-free energy sources in county-owned facilities. Installation of Honeywell’s solutions across the 11 sites is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

Sudhakar Janakiraman, president of Honeywell Building Solutions, said: “By collaborating together with Ramsey County on this project, we are not just helping to drive a positive outcome for the county but are also helping to create a better experience for the skaters, families and staff across the entire community. With cutting edge systems, Ramsey County will now have the tools to help reduce both costs and energy usage to further accelerate its climate action goals.”

The improvements include renewable power integration at two major ice rinks—Aldrich Arena and TCO Sports Garden—through new solar panels. Four other arenas (Oscar Johnson, Ken Yackel – West Side, White Bear, and Shoreview) will receive upgrades for refrigerant leak detection aimed at improving chiller efficiency and safety.

Mark McCabe, director of Ramsey County Parks and Recreation, stated: “Ramsey County’s ice rinks and parks facilities are vital to our community, and these building automation upgrades will help ensure they will remain welcoming and reliable spaces for years to come. By tapping Honeywell’s deep expertise in both automation and energy management solutions, we are improving the way these buildings operate in order to reduce our energy use, save taxpayers money and deliver on our promise to pursue carbon-free energy sources.”
