Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE has chosen Honeywell to supply advanced technology, services, proprietary catalysts, and equipment for an expansion project at its refinery in Lekki, Nigeria. The goal is to double the facility’s production capacity by 2028.

Currently processing 650,000 barrels per day, the refinery aims to increase output to 1.4 million barrels per day within three years. This expansion would make Dangote’s facility the largest petroleum refinery in the world. The increased capacity is expected to boost fuel production within Africa, reduce reliance on imports, and enhance local energy security.

Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, stated: “Our continued collaboration with Honeywell marks a significant milestone not only for Dangote’s refinery, but for Nigeria’s energy sector as a whole. Through the use of Honeywell’s proven, advanced technologies, we can set new production standards for the industry while contributing to Nigeria’s energy independence and economic growth.”

Honeywell has supplied process technology to Dangote’s Lekki refinery for nearly ten years. The new project will allow Dangote to maximize its existing equipment and infrastructure in order to achieve greater return on investment and speed up project completion.

Rajesh Gattupalli, President of Honeywell UOP, commented: “Honeywell is committed to delivering groundbreaking technologies that empower customers, drive operational excellence, and support regional energy security efforts. Our work with Dangote demonstrates how innovation and collaboration can help enhance regional energy independence and support Africa’s growing energy needs.”

The agreement also includes licensing Honeywell’s Oleflex technology at the site. This technology converts propane into propylene through catalytic dehydrogenation. With this addition, Dangote will produce 750,000 metric tons of propylene annually and raise its total polypropylene output—a key material in plastic products such as packaging—to 2.4 million metric tons per year.

The Lekki facility is described as the largest single-train refinery globally that produces Euro-V quality gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and polypropylene.

Honeywell reports that its process technologies have been licensed at more than 6,000 refineries and industrial facilities worldwide.
