Honeywell has introduced Honeywell Protonium, a suite of artificial intelligence and machine learning-enabled technologies aimed at improving the efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and scalability of green hydrogen production. The company announced that Aternium, a U.S.-based clean hydrogen producer, will be the first to deploy these technologies at its planned Mid-Atlantic Clean Hydrogen Hub (MACH2). MACH2 is one of seven national hydrogen hubs chosen for an award by the U.S. Department of Energy.

The Protonium suite addresses challenges in green hydrogen production such as power intermittency, carbon intensity reduction, and high production costs. By integrating predictive control algorithms, the solution aims to enhance electrolysis efficiency and optimize plant design and operations.

Andrew Cottone, CEO and Founder of Aternium, stated: “Our selection of the Honeywell Protonium portfolio for our planned Mid-Atlantic sites was a strategic decision to ensure we operate with the highest efficiency and safety standards. Honeywell’s proven expertise and innovative solutions will be instrumental in helping us achieve our mission of producing clean hydrogen with an exceptional commitment to safety while adding value for our communities and investors.”

Pramesh Maheshwari, President of Honeywell Process Solutions, added: “Honeywell is helping to accelerate the commercial viability of green hydrogen use through optimized design and improved efficiency of plants. As adoption of green hydrogen as a diversified energy source continues to grow, it is crucial for producers to look to autonomy to ultimately advance electrification and the energy transition. With these new technologies, we are helping to further reshape the green hydrogen landscape and equip producers with the transformative solutions they need to scale.”

The Protonium portfolio includes three offerings designed for clean hydrogen producers globally. According to Honeywell, these tools can help reduce emissions, lower costs, and support industries in achieving sustainability goals.
