The Governor’s Advisory Committee on Student Safety and Well-Being will hold a meeting this Thursday, May 8. Media representatives are invited to attend the meeting online.

Governor Josh Stein established the Advisory Committee through an Executive Order. The committee’s mission is to promote North Carolina’s commitment to making schools safe, welcoming, and inclusive by implementing solutions that enhance school safety and improve students’ physical, social, and emotional well-being. It will also provide recommendations, offer guidance to state agencies, work with local communities, and share best practices. A primary focus of the committee is collaborating with the General Assembly to support school systems in implementing policies that create cellphone-free classrooms.

The Advisory Committee is co-chaired by Senator Sydney Batch, Democratic Senate leader; Heather Smith, North Carolina Teacher of the Year from Haywood County; and William L. Lassiter, Deputy Secretary of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

The meeting will be available via live stream.
