Governor Josh Stein provided updates on the recent flooding affecting central North Carolina. He urged residents to stay informed about ongoing road closures and to heed safety warnings.
“I am grateful to the first responders who are keeping people safe and for the proactive work of emergency management professionals and the North Carolina Department of Transportation,” said Governor Josh Stein. “I urge all North Carolinians to listen to any guidance from local weather and local emergency management officials and be aware of any road warnings and closures before they leave the house.”
Local states of emergency have been declared in Alamance, Moore, and Orange Counties, with reports of flooding also coming from Durham County. The North Carolina Emergency Management is actively supporting affected communities by providing resources, rescue teams, and personnel as needed.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has managed to reopen several major roads that were closed due to flooding, including I-40/85 in Alamance County. However, approximately 120 roads remain closed. The department advises against attempting to drive through standing water.
For real-time travel information, residents are encouraged to follow their local government and news outlets on websites and social media platforms. Many local emergency management agencies offer public notification systems for residents to sign up for alerts.
North Carolina Emergency Management officials have shared safety tips in case of flooding: Listen to local weather forecasts as floods can occur suddenly; enable emergency alerts on your cell phone; respect barricades as they are there for safety; turn around if you encounter flooding; avoid walking through moving water; do not drive through flooded areas; visit Fiman.NC.Gov for access to over 600 flood gauges across the state and sign up for alerts.
