Governor Josh Stein released a statement on May 12 regarding the ongoing budget negotiations in North Carolina. Stein said, “It is past time that our teachers, state law enforcement officers, and state employees get a meaningful pay raise and recognition for their service to the people of North Carolina. Today’s announcement is only a framework, but if the final budget actually includes real salary increases, it would be welcome. The proof, however, will be in the pudding.”
The governor’s remarks come as lawmakers discuss changes that could impact public sector workers across the state. Stein also addressed concerns about a proposed constitutional amendment related to fiscal policy.
“The proposed constitutional amendment would put North Carolina in a financial straight jacket that could wreak havoc on our public schools and public safety. If we want to continue to be the best state to live, work, and raise a family for years to come, we must be fiscally responsible and not make working families bear an unfair burden,” Stein said.
The Office of the Governor of North Carolina serves as chief executive for the entire state by executing laws, leading the Council of State, influencing policy through directing budgets and granting pardons, serving as commander in chief of the National Guard, and appointing executive officials according to the official website.
Stein has served as North Carolina’s 76th governor according to information from the official website. Observers are watching how these negotiations may affect education funding and other key services across North Carolina.
