Members of the media have been invited to attend a virtual meeting of the Governor’s Advisory Council for Student Safety and Well-Being, scheduled for Monday, September 29, from 9 to 11:30 a.m.

The Advisory Council was created by Governor Josh Stein through an executive order. Its purpose is to promote safe, welcoming, and inclusive schools across North Carolina by proposing and implementing measures aimed at improving student safety and supporting their physical, social, and emotional well-being. The council works on making recommendations, offering guidance to state agencies, collaborating with local communities, and sharing best practices.

One recent initiative includes publishing guidance in June 2025 to help school systems develop and implement policies that create cell phone-free environments in schools.

The council is co-chaired by Senator Sydney Batch, Senate Democratic Leader; Heather Smith, the 2024 North Carolina Teacher of the Year from Haywood County; and William L. Lassiter, deputy secretary of the Division of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

A livestream of the meeting will be available online. The public can submit comments through an online portal.
