State and local emergency officials, along with Duke Energy representatives, are set to conduct an exercise on August 26, 2025, to test emergency response plans for the McGuire Nuclear Plant in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The drill will focus on the 10-mile Emergency Planning Zone surrounding the plant and will evaluate command, control, communications, and response capabilities among state, county, and utility partners.
Such exercises are mandated every two years by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to ensure readiness within a 10-mile radius of nuclear plants. In addition, once every eight years, state and local officials must also test broader plans covering a 50-mile radius. These expanded drills include consideration of agricultural interests, food supply safety, and procedures for returning residents home after an evacuation.
Following the exercise, FEMA evaluators will hold a public meeting to present their findings. The session is scheduled for August 28, 2025 at 11 a.m., at Sherrills Ford Library in Terrell.
