The annual State Farmers Market Largest Watermelon Contest this year was dedicated to Donald Murphy, a longtime participant who died earlier in the year. Murphy had been a regular at the event and on Watermelon Day for over three decades.
His sons entered a watermelon their father had started growing before his passing, continuing a family tradition that spans more than 30 years. Monica Wood, manager of the State Farmers Market, commented on the family’s participation: “Seeing his sons and family at Watermelon Day to carry on their tradition is a reminder of how strong North Carolina farm families are,” said Wood. “We are proud to honor his legacy with this year’s largest watermelon contest.”
Rodney Register of Nakina won first place with a watermelon weighing 222.5 pounds. The late Donald Murphy’s entry earned second place with a 179.1-pound melon, while Leighton Murphy placed third with a 161.7-pound entry. John Bass from Fairmont took fourth place at 160.8 pounds, and Cephus Ray of Bailey received an honorable mention.
In addition, Knox Basden, great-grandson of Donald Murphy, was given “The Donald Murphy Future Growers Award.”
The Largest Watermelon Contest takes place each summer during Watermelon Day at the State Farmers Market to mark peak watermelon season and highlight the work of North Carolina watermelon growers. The winning melon is currently displayed at the State Farmers Market Restaurant.
The market operates all year and provides locally grown produce and specialty foods from across North Carolina nurseries and farms. Shoppers can visit daily between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., located off Exit 297 on Interstate 40 in Raleigh. More information about events and seasonal offerings can be found on the State Farmers Market website or through its Facebook page.
