Duke Energy has announced its intention to apply for approval from the Public Service Commission of South Carolina (PSCSC) to construct a new natural gas power plant in Anderson County. This marks the company’s first request to build new generation capacity in South Carolina in a decade.
The proposed project aims to address the growing electricity demand due to economic development and population growth in the state. The facility is expected to use existing transmission infrastructure and provide approximately 1,400 megawatts of electricity. It will be located on nearly 200 acres near Highway 81 South and True Temper Road in Anderson County.
Duke Energy’s plan aligns with actions approved in its Carolinas Resource Plan in 2024. The company expects to submit the construction application later this year, with construction anticipated to start by summer 2027. If approved, the plant could begin serving customers by early 2031.
Governor Henry McMaster expressed support for the project, stating, “South Carolina’s continued prosperity depends on reliable, forward-looking energy projects like this one.” Speaker of the House Murrell Smith also endorsed Duke Energy’s investment as a necessary response to the state’s rapid growth.
Senate President Thomas Alexander highlighted the importance of meeting future energy demands, saying, “When you flip a switch, you should have confidence the lights will come on.” Anderson County Council Chairman Tommy Dunn noted that Duke Energy has been integral to Anderson County for many years and emphasized potential benefits for local schools and the economy.
Duke Energy South Carolina President Tim Pearson remarked on planning for South Carolina’s energy future, acknowledging state leaders’ efforts through legislative measures like the S.C. Energy Security Act.
Duke Energy serves millions of customers across several states and is focused on transitioning towards cleaner energy sources while maintaining reliability and value for its customers.
