Duke Energy Florida has announced the completion of the Sundance Renewable Energy Center in Madison County. This solar site will contribute 74.9 megawatts of clean energy to the electric grid, promising savings for the company’s 2 million customers throughout its operational lifespan.

“Solar energy is an important component of Duke Energy Florida’s ‘all of the above’ generation strategy,” said Melissa Seixas, Duke Energy Florida state president. “With sites like the Sundance Renewable Energy Center, we are diversifying our fleet and ensuring we can continue providing reliable, affordable service for our customers for years to come.”

Duke Energy Florida plans to establish four new solar sites by 2026. The Madison County site is the first completed, with construction underway in Sumter and Hernando counties. A fourth site is planned for Jefferson County later this year. Collectively, these sites are expected to generate nearly 300 megawatts of clean energy and save approximately one billion dollars in fuel costs over their lifetimes.

Currently, Duke Energy Florida owns more than 25 solar sites across the state, generating about 1,500 megawatts of clean energy. Between 2025 and 2027, it plans to build 12 new solar sites, including Sundance Renewable Energy Center, adding another 900 megawatts to the grid. By 2033, Duke Energy Florida aims to have over 6,100 megawatts of utility-scale solar capacity online.

As a subsidiary of Duke Energy, Duke Energy Florida supplies electricity across a service area spanning 13,000 square miles in Florida with an energy capacity of 12,300 megawatts.

Duke Energy itself is headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., serving a wide customer base across several states and holding an energy capacity of 54,800 megawatts. The company is focused on transitioning towards cleaner energy sources while maintaining reliability and value for its customers.
