Duke Energy has announced a significant initiative to support emergency response organizations in North Carolina with $500,000 in storm preparedness funds. The grants are aimed at bolstering severe weather preparedness efforts across the state.

Twenty government agencies and nonprofits will each receive $25,000 from the Duke Energy Foundation. These Helping Emergency Response Organizations (HERO) grants are designed to enhance community resources, emergency responders, and resident readiness for major storms.

The initiative comes in response to recent natural disasters that have affected North Carolina from the coast to the western mountains. With predictions of another intense storm season, Duke Energy Foundation is providing local organizations with essential resources.

Kendal Bowman, Duke Energy’s North Carolina president, emphasized the importance of collaboration: “Last storm season underscored the resilience of our North Carolina communities. Proactive collaboration with local emergency response organizations is necessary to ensure that communities are prepared to maintain that resilience.”

Tommy Batson, Pender County Emergency Management Director, noted the challenges faced during Tropical Storm Helene in 2024: “Pender County…is one disaster from losing the communications we use every day.” He highlighted how the grant would help bridge communication gaps during future events.

Tony Ray, Town of Beaufort Fire Chief, stated: “The support from the Duke Energy Foundation is a vital investment in the safety of our community.”

Don Mail, Vice Chair of Wake County Board of Commissioners, expressed gratitude for Duke Energy’s support: “Emergency preparedness starts at the individual level…our whole community becomes more resilient.”

Since its inception five years ago, Duke Energy Foundation has provided over $1.8 million to more than 100 local emergency response organizations in North Carolina.

The grant recipients include Anson County, Town of Beaufort, Belews Creek Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, Buncombe County among others.

Duke Energy Foundation annually provides over $30 million in philanthropic support where Duke Energy customers reside. Funded by shareholders, it aims to meet community needs through various initiatives.

Duke Energy serves 8.6 million electric utility customers across six states and owns substantial energy capacity. The company is focused on transitioning towards cleaner energy while maintaining customer reliability and value.
