N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) Secretary Reid Wilson is set to join staff, state, and local officials on May 16 for a visit to the Masonboro Island Reserve in Wilmington. This event is part of the Discover the N.C. Coastal Reserve Tour, aimed at raising awareness about North Carolina’s coastal resources.

The tour forms part of a multi-year campaign running from 2023 to 2026, organized by the Division of Coastal Management. The initiative celebrates the N.C. Coastal Reserve’s work across ten reserve sites and programs dedicated to protecting coastal ecosystems.

During this fourth stop on the tour, Secretary Wilson will provide brief remarks alongside other representatives. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in a guided boat trip and a nature trail walk at Masonboro Island Reserve.

The Division is also marking the 40th anniversary of N.C.’s National Estuarine Research Reserve this year. This designation by both the state and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration was pivotal in establishing the broader N.C. Coastal Reserve framework.

The event is scheduled from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., beginning at UNCW Center for Marine Science in Wilmington. Media participation may be limited due to boat seating availability.

This occasion will emphasize how Masonboro Island Reserve contributes through science, monitoring, public education, and access to coastal areas, enhancing quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

Credentialed press are invited to attend with prior RSVP required by May 15 via Christy Simmons (christy.simmons@deq.nc.gov).
