The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s State Energy Office is inviting public input on the 2025 Draft North Carolina Energy Security Plan until July 14, 2025. The plan evaluates significant threats, vulnerabilities, and risks to the state’s energy system, including issues such as severe weather, cybersecurity threats, aging infrastructure, supply interdependencies, and physical attacks.

The document proposes mitigation strategies and recommendations to reduce these risks. These include deploying microgrids, enhancing infrastructure strength, adopting cybersecurity measures, diversifying energy generation resources, and installing grid-enhancing technology. Additionally, it details coordination and response efforts for energy emergencies.

According to the DEQ’s release: “North Carolina’s energy system underpins the state’s economy, health and safety infrastructure.” The proposed strategies aim to strengthen the resilience and reliability of the energy system while minimizing disruptions and related impacts.

Members of the public can submit their input via email to seo.publiccomments@deq.nc.gov with “2025 NC Energy Security Plan” in the subject line. The draft plan is available online for review.
