Residents in counties affected by Tropical Storm Helene have until February 28, 2026, to apply for partial reimbursement of private road and bridge repair costs. The program offers up to 50 percent reimbursement for both completed and anticipated repairs.

NC Emergency Management Director Will Ray emphasized the importance of these connections, stating, “Throughout western North Carolina, private roads and bridges connect communities, neighborhoods, and businesses, many of which were damaged in Helene. With the deadline for North Carolinians to seek reimbursement to offset the costs approaching, we want to remind property owners that have paid for repairs or replacements or anticipate expenses to please consider applying for reimbursement assistance.”

The initiative was authorized when Governor Josh Stein signed legislation on June 27, 2025. This measure allocated up to $25 million for reimbursing eligible repair expenses.

To participate, residents must complete an online application on the Department of Public Safety’s website. After submission, an on-site review of the repair work is required.

Applications with documentation of completed repairs will be processed as they are received. Those who have not yet finished their projects may also apply; their applications will be held for up to six months while work is completed and documentation verified. Processing depends on the availability of funds within the program.

Applicants are advised to upload invoices and receipts promptly since reimbursements are made in order of application until all funds are distributed.

The North Carolina Private Road and Bridge Program continues its support as western North Carolina recovers from Tropical Storm Helene.
