Apple has announced that the App Store ecosystem in the United States facilitated $406 billion in developer billings and sales in 2024. This data comes from a study by Professor Andrey Fradkin of Boston University Questrom School of Business and economist Dr. Jessica Burley from Analysis Group. Notably, over 90 percent of these billings and sales did not incur any commission to Apple.
Over the past five years, the App Store’s economic impact has grown significantly, nearly tripling from $142 billion in 2019 to $406 billion last year. U.S.-based developers have seen their earnings more than double during this period. Small developers have experienced notable success, with their earnings increasing by 76 percent between 2021 and 2024.
“For more than 15 years, the App Store has created incredible opportunity for app developers, entrepreneurs, and businesses of all sizes,” stated Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “That includes the many U.S. developers who are innovating, building their businesses, and finding exceptional success on the App Store.”
The study estimates that in 2024 alone, $277 billion came from physical goods and services through the App Store ecosystem, while in-app advertising contributed $75 billion and digital goods and services added another $53 billion. Growth was driven by food and grocery delivery apps as well as entertainment and enterprise applications.
Spending on physical goods and services through apps has more than tripled since 2019. In-app spending on digital goods/services and advertising has doubled over the same period. General retail spending within apps increased fourfold alongside grocery delivery.
Globally, U.S.-based developers have also achieved considerable success by listing their apps across storefronts in 175 countries/regions supported by seamless payment systems offered by Apple’s platform.
The App Store continues its role as a secure marketplace due to Apple’s rigorous review processes preventing fraudulent transactions worth over $9 billion over five years while rejecting non-compliant submissions such as those lacking security or reliability standards set forth by Apple themselves.
Apple remains committed to improving distribution capabilities for developers via enhancements made towards various features including analytics tools like App Analytics along with custom product pages amongst others—helping them get discovered across different markets worldwide.
