Apple has announced that the global App Store ecosystem facilitated $1.3 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2024, as per a study conducted by economists Professor Andrey Fradkin from Boston University Questrom School of Business and Dr. Jessica Burley from Analysis Group. A significant portion of these transactions, over 90%, did not involve commission payments to Apple.
Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, remarked on the achievements: “It’s incredible to see so many developers design great apps, build successful businesses, and reach Apple users around the world.” He emphasized the role of developers in enriching lives through innovative app experiences.
The study by Fradkin and Burley revealed diverse monetization avenues for developers on the App Store. In 2024, digital goods and services generated $131 billion, with notable contributions from games and enterprise tools. Physical goods and services surpassed $1 trillion due to increased demand for online food delivery and grocery orders. In-app advertising revenue reached $150 billion.
Since 2019, spending across all categories has more than doubled. Physical goods saw a growth rate of +2.6x, driven by food delivery trends. The rise in digital goods is attributed to ongoing interest in games and content creation apps like photo editing tools.
The App Store serves as a global platform attracting over 813 million weekly visitors worldwide. Over five years, billings have more than doubled in regions including the U.S., China, and Europe. Digital payment spending grew significantly in the U.S., while China’s e-commerce expansion led to increased online grocery spending.
Spending on travel apps was notable in Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and India. Apps supporting digital content creation have seen steady user investment over five years.
Apple supports developers with tools like Xcode and TestFlight for app development testing, App Analytics for performance monitoring, and Product Page Optimization for improved performance insights.
The company also protects users against fraud; over $9 billion in fraudulent transactions were prevented within five years.
