Apple has unveiled iOS 26, a significant update that introduces a new design and enhanced features across its system. The update aims to improve user experience with a focus on privacy and intelligent capabilities.

Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of Software Engineering, commented on the release: “iOS 26 shines with the gorgeous new design and meaningful improvements to the features users rely on every day, making iPhone even more helpful.” He added that the update makes experiences more expressive and personal while integrating powerful Apple Intelligence capabilities.

The design changes include Liquid Glass, a translucent material that enhances app icons and widgets. This material also allows for new customization options on the Home Screen and Lock Screen. In addition, apps like Camera and Photos have been streamlined for better user interaction.

Apple Intelligence now includes Live Translation in Messages, FaceTime, and Phone apps. It runs entirely on-device to ensure privacy. Users can also utilize visual intelligence to search or take action based on what they see onscreen.

The Phone app has been updated with a unified layout combining Favorites, Recents, and Voicemails. Call Screening is improved to help users manage interruptions by providing caller information before answering.

Messages now offer screening options for unknown senders, custom backgrounds, polls, typing indicators in group chats, and Apple Cash transactions. CarPlay receives updates for improved usability while driving.

Other enhancements include Lyrics Translation in Apple Music and Visited Places in Apple Maps. Updates in Apple Wallet facilitate easier interactions with physical stores using installment payments or rewards through Apple Pay.

A new app called Apple Games consolidates gaming experiences into one platform. AirPods receive updates for better audio recording quality and camera remote functions.

Parental controls are expanded to enhance child safety across devices. Safari browsing becomes more private with advanced fingerprinting protection by default.

Accessibility features are upgraded with Accessibility Reader and Braille Access interfaces among others. The update is available for testing through Apple’s Developer Program with a public beta next month. It will be released as a free software update this fall for iPhone 11 models onwards.

Availability of some features may vary depending on language support or regional laws. For further details about these updates or their availability visit apple.com/apple-intelligence.
