Apple Music has partnered with Universal Music Group (UMG) to launch Sound Therapy, a collection aimed at enhancing listeners’ focus, relaxation, and sleep through music. This initiative integrates sound waves and cognitive science into music tracks to support users’ wellness.
Michael Nash, UMG’s executive vice president and chief digital officer, emphasized the strategic importance of this venture: “For years, elevating music’s role in health and wellbeing has been a strategic priority for UMG, linked to a potentially significant commercial opportunity, as well as something that our chairman and CEO, Sir Lucian, and the entire management team are passionate about.” He further stated that “the launch of Sound Therapy represents an important validation of our innovative, science-led Sollos initiative.”
Rachel Newman from Apple Music highlighted the collaborative nature of the project: “Every day, people around the world make Apple Music part of their daily routine… Now, with Sound Therapy, we’re proud to work alongside UMG and Sollos to bring a new listening experience to Apple Music — one that’s grounded in artistry, shaped by innovation, and designed to support wellness.”
Sound Therapy will be exclusively available on Apple Music. It combines familiar songs with special sound waves without altering the artist’s original vision. The project is supported by scientific research from UMG’s Sollos initiative. It features reimagined versions of popular tracks by artists like Imagine Dragons and Katy Perry.
The collection is divided into three categories: Focus, Relax, and Sleep. Each category uses specific auditory techniques such as gamma waves for focus or pink noise for sleep. For example, a version of Katy Perry’s “Double Rainbow” aims to help listeners fall asleep.
This release follows Apple’s ongoing commitment to health-focused technologies such as Apple Watch and HealthKit. The company will collaborate with Sollos and UMG to expand scientific research on audio benefits for wellbeing.
The introduction of Sound Therapy coincides with the new Apple Music Chill radio station. This station offers a continuous stream of relaxing music across genres with input from hosts like Zane Lowe.
