Apple has announced new measures aimed at helping parents protect their children and teenagers online. The updates, set to be released this fall with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, watchOS 26, visionOS 26, and tvOS 26, are designed to provide age-appropriate experiences from the initial setup of Apple devices.
For years, Apple has offered Child Accounts that must be linked to a parent or guardian’s account within a Family Sharing group. These accounts ensure that children under the age of 13 have access to age-appropriate content. Recently streamlined processes now allow for easier setup of these accounts and parental controls.
Parents can now verify the correct age setting on their child’s account and connect it to their Family group. This connection will convert the account into a Child Account with default settings tailored for children. Parents also have the option to share their child’s age range with app developers without disclosing exact birth dates through the new Declared Age Range API.
The update ensures families can enjoy appropriate app experiences without unnecessary data collection by the App Store. Protections such as web content filters and Communication Safety are extended to users aged 13 to 17 regardless of whether they have a Child Account or standard Apple Account.
App Store age ratings will be expanded into five categories by year-end: three ratings specifically for adolescents (13+, 16+, and 18+). This expansion aims to give users clearer information about app appropriateness while providing developers more precise rating options.
Communication Limits are also being enhanced; parents will now approve who their kids communicate with across Phone, FaceTime, Messages, and iCloud contacts via requests sent by children when contacting new numbers. PermissionKit framework adoption allows similar control in third-party apps.
Additional improvements include updates across App Store product pages indicating user-generated content presence and advertising capabilities. When restrictions are set for a child’s account regarding app content limits exceeding specified ratings will not appear in certain tabs or editorial stories on the App Store.
Further enhancements include intervention when nudity is detected during FaceTime video calls or Shared Albums in Photos through Communication Safety features which blur inappropriate content automatically.

“These new tools build on the parental controls already available in Screen Time and on the App Store,” an Apple spokesperson said.
