N.C. Forest Service Assistant Alleghany County Ranger Russell Choate has been honored with the 2024 Moreland Gueth Water Quality Award. This award is presented annually to recognize an N.C. Forest Service employee or team that demonstrates creativity and dedication in protecting North Carolina’s water resources.
Brandon Keener, NCFS Alleghany County ranger, praised Choate’s contributions: “Russell has been a huge asset, especially when it comes to water quality. He has focused on inspections and has worked tirelessly to grow the program. With his consistent and diligent approach, Russell has elevated the water quality program in Alleghany County to another level.”
The Moreland Gueth Water Quality Award was established in 2010 in honor of its namesake, who served as the N.C. Forest Service’s water quality and wetlands staff forester from 1995 to 2004. Gueth was known for his strong stance on protecting water quality while maintaining fairness and a practical approach when working with loggers and landowners.
Choate’s work involves conducting high-quality service inspections related to forest practice guidelines (FPGs). Over the past four years, he has carried out 345 inspections and improved stream crossings by consulting with loggers before construction and providing recommendations for proper establishment. His efforts have led to increased use of bridgemats, temporary culvert installations, and bumper trees to reduce sedimentation at crossings.
Keener further commended Choate’s commitment: “Russell has continually proven himself to be dedicated to water quality, striving to build a water quality reputation for Alleghany County. His consistent presence on logging operations, giving sound recommendations and being readily available to assist forestry partners has greatly improved the program and reputation of the N.C. Forest Service in both the county and district.”
