Next month, AirPods Max will receive a software update that introduces lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio. This update aims to enhance the listening experience for users and improve performance in music production. The new features will be accessible through the included USB-C cable, allowing users to enjoy high-quality audio across various media such as music, movies, and games.
The update will enable AirPods Max to support 24-bit, 48 kHz lossless audio. This feature preserves the original quality of recordings, providing listeners with an authentic studio experience. Apple Music subscribers can access over 100 million songs in this format.
Music creators are expected to benefit from these updates as well. The introduction of lossless audio and ultra-low latency audio allows musicians to fully utilize AirPods Max in their professional workflows on platforms like Logic Pro and other music creation applications. The headphones will be capable of creating and mixing in Personalized Spatial Audio with head tracking when connected via USB-C. Artists can record and mix without compromising sound fidelity due to the delivery of high-resolution digital audio with minimal latency.
Gamers and livestreamers are also set to gain from the ultra-low latency feature, which reduces lag time significantly. This improvement aligns with the native built-in speakers found on Mac, iPad, and iPhone devices, ensuring smooth gameplay and streaming experiences.
The new features will be available in April through a free firmware update compatible with iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and macOS Sequoia 15.4 for AirPods Max equipped with USB-C.
Currently priced at $549 (U.S.), AirPods Max is available in five colors: midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and orange via apple.com/store, the Apple Store app, or Apple Authorized Resellers.
Additionally, a USB-C to 3.5 mm audio cable is now available for $39 (U.S.) from apple.com/store or through authorized sellers. This cable enables connections between AirPods Max and 3.5 mm audio sources like airplane ports or car stereos.
